Screamers

Outdoor Smartphone

This Top 5 is devoted to the screamer – the shots that embarrass keepers, beating them from distance with dip, bend and raw, brutal power. There were too many to choose from in this category, but these are my top five.

5. Steve Staunton, Aston Villa (v Manchester United)
This effort from Staunton sticks in the mind for two reasons. One, the Nelinho-esque (more of him shortly) outside of the boot in-swing; and, two, the sound of the ball smacking against the stanchion between post and bar.

4. Arie Haan, Netherlands (v West Germany)
Haan makes Sepp Maier look a bit stupid. What’s not to like? The second hit in this video’s not bad either…

3. Andrea Pirlo, AC Milan (v Parma)
There’s an effortless style to this ridiculous ranger from Pirlo. The ball glides into the top corner. Classy.

2. Ronnie Radford, Hereford (v Newcastle)
I’ll never tire of watching this goal. It’s a perfect hit. The ball holds up perfectly in the mud so that Radford can take it in his stride. But, to catch it that sweetly in a cup tie when you’re the massive underdog, and in front of your own fans, is the stuff of legend; the pitch invasion that ensued is testament to its glory. As John Motson says, “Oh, what a goal! WHAT A GOAL!”

1.Nelinho, Brazil (v Italy)
“Nelinho… Oh, that’s a good one!” Yes, it was. Staunton’s effort was decent, but this is the real thing. If the Italians had parked an actual bus in front of the goal, that wouldn’t be a problem for Nelinho. Stunning.
