Headers

Headers are harder than they look, just ask Peter Crouch. Here are five players who knew what they were doing.

5. Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United (v Roma)

For all his ridiculous footwork and speed on the ball, Ronaldo is also a beast in the air. This is an awesome header. He nailed himself in the process, but what a goal.

4. Jurgen Klinsmann, Tottenham (v Sheffield Wednesday)
Klinsmann was, to be frank, fucking brilliant at headers, just look at the technique for in 1990. However, this one against Wednesday is classic Klinsmann – an exaggerated flick of the head to power the ball home. No one heads a ball like Klinsmann.

3. Jared Borgetti, Mexico (v Italy)
A rare moment of quality from what I remember as a fairly bland world cup. An incredible flicked header from Borgetti with his back to goal. Wait for the replay from behind the goal to see how good it was:

2. Tino Asprilla, Newcastle (v Barcelona)

His second goal on 2:57 is my favourite, but his third follows a fantastic break from Gillespie – start watching at about 4:18 to see him skin the Barca fullback. Or, just watch the whole ten thing. I mean, it’s Newcastle beating Barcelona.

1. Yordan Letchkov, Bulgaria (v Germany)
What. A. Goal. Coming shortly after the legendary Hristo Stoichkov had pulled Bulgaria level with a , this was the first time in my life that I had seen a German team rattled, and then Letchkov went for the jugular…
